We propose that assortative matching, a well-established paradigm in other industry sectors and academic disciplines, can underpin the concept of destination matching. This provides a new foundation to integrate research concepts and terminology in destination marketing and destination choice. We argue that the commercial tourism industry already applies destination matching approaches, with three historical phases. Initially, matching of tourists and destinations relied on the tacit expertise of specialist agents. This still applies in specialist subsectors. For generalist travel and accommodation, human agents were partially replaced by online travel agents, OTAs, which are customised algorithms operating only in the travel sector. These still exist, but their share price trends suggest decreasing significance. Currently, automated assortative algorithms use multiple sources of digital data to push appealing offers to potential purchasers, across all retail sectors. Digital marketing strategies for tourism products, enterprises, and destinations are now just one category of generalised product–purchaser matching, using entirely automated algorithms. Researchers do not have access to proprietary algorithms, but we can identify which components they incorporate by analysing their underlying patents. We propose that theories of destination marketing and choice need to reflect these recent and rapid real-world changes via deliberate analysis of destination matching.

In response to the unexpected outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), governments worldwide implemented stringent measures to contain its transmission. This study investigates the effect of the stringency of COVID-19 outbreak government measures on hotel occupancy rates in the world’s top ten visitor destination countries. The analysis in this study draws upon the recently developed novel indicator, government stringency, compiled systematically by the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker for March 2020 to March 2021. By adopting a structural consumer choice model, the panel estimation procedure is applied to assess the effect of government stringency on hotel occupancy rates. The findings revealed a statistically significant adverse effect of government stringency on hotel occupancy rates. The findings suggest that although government containment measures had the desired effect of reducing transmissions of COVID-19 and a crucial predictor of hotel occupancy rates in the top ten tourist destination countries, it adversely impacted the tourism hospitality sector through reduced demand for hotel accommodation as occupancy rates plunged. This study's analysis supports the consumer choice modelling approach as it can be considered a relevant analytical framework that is satisfactorily able to explain the adverse effects of governments containment measures on hotel occupancy rates. This research contributes to the tourism modelling literature and complements previous studies in providing an additional understanding of the effect of government stringency measures based on the newly established Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker Database within a coherent modelling framework.

Turist destinasyon seçimi Uzaklık arzusu Uzaklık çelişkisi Planlanmış davranış teorisi Öz İnsanlar uzaklık kavramının negatif yönüne dikkat çekmek için sık sık "Gözden ırak olan gönülden de ırak olur." atasözünü kullanmaktadırlar. Acaba bu atasözü turistlerin destinasyon seçim karar süreçlerinde de geçerli midir? Bu çalışmada turistlerin destinasyon seçim karar süreçlerinde sergiledikleri davranış boyutlarının uzaklık arzularına ile seyahat davranış niyetlerine etkilerinin ve aynı zamanda uzaklık arzularının seyahat davranış niyetlerine etkilerinin ölçülmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bu kapsamda Kapadokya destinasyonunu Haziran-Ağustos 2019 döneminde ziyaret eden Japon turistlere kendilerinin cevaplandırdıkları toplam 450 anket formu ulaştırılmıştır. Anketlerden elde edilen veriler (408 anket) SPSS programında analize tabi tutulmuştur. Yapılan analizlerde; Planlanmış Davranış Teorisi-Uzaklık Arzusu (PDT-UA) ölçeğinin tutum, sübjektif norm, algılanan davranışsal kontrol, seyahat davranış niyeti ve uzaklık arzusu boyutlarından oluştuğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Tüm planlanmış davranış teorisi boyutlarının yüksek ve pozitif düzeyde turistlerin destinasyon seyahat niyetlerini ve turistlerin uzaklık arzularını etkilediği ve ayrıca turistlerin uzaklık arzusu boyutunun yine çok yüksek ve pozitif düzeyde destinasyon seyahat niyetlerini etkilediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
