How is the surface Atlantic water inflow through the Gibraltar Strait forecasted? A lagrangian validation of operational oceanographic services in the Alboran Sea and the Western Mediterranean

Abstract: An exhaustive validation of operational ocean forecast products available in the Gibraltar Strait and the Alboran Sea is presented. The skill of two ocean model solutions (i.e. the regional CMEMS IBI and the local PdE SAMPA ones) in reproducing the complex surface dynamics in the above areas is evaluated. To this aim, in-situ measurements from 35 drifter buoys (the MEDESS-GIB database) are used as observational reference. A Lagrangian separation distance and a skill score have been applied to evaluate the perf… Show more

“…The seasonal variability and occasional interruptions of the Atlantic inflow due to meteorological forcing have been previously investigated with in situ data from fixed moorings [10,11]. More recently, a considerable number of satellite tracked drifters were released on both sides of the SoG within the framework of MEDESS-4MS project, thus providing a complete Lagrangian view of the Atlantic waters inflow into the Alboran Sea [16,17].…”

“…Complementarily, opportunistic inter-comparisons are conducted in the frame of diverse EU-funded projects such as MEDESS-4MS (Sotillo et al, 2016a): 35 satellite-tracked drifters were released on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar and the quality-controlled in situ data of sea surface temperature and currents were collected to build the MEDESS-GIB database (Sotillo et al, 2016b), hence providing a complete Lagrangian view of the surface inflow of Atlantic waters through the GIBST and the Alboran Sea. Such valuable oceanographic information was subsequently used to compare IBI and SAMPA forecast products to identify strengths (realistic simulation of the Atlantic Jet and the Algerian Current) and shortcomings (position and intensity of the Alboran gyres, especially the western one) in both model performances.…”

“…Previous research has unequivocally proved the ability of PdE-SAMPA to accurately capture basic circulation features of the GIBST area and Algeciras Bay (Sanchez-Garrido et al, 2014;Sammartino et al, 2014;Soto-Navarro et al, 2016). A preliminary model skill assessment was conducted within the framework of the MEDESS-4MS project (Sotillo et al, 2016a). However, the added value of this coastal OOFS with respect to the regional IBI system was only quantified from a Lagrangian perspective by using a wealth of drifters.…”

“…The REG model has been already validated at tidal (Sammartino et al ) and subinertial timescales (Sánchez Garrido et al ). The operational system SAMPA (http://sampa-apba.puertos.es/) maintained by the Spanish National and Bay of Algeciras Port Authorities uses REG as the hydrodynamic model and, within this frame, its outputs have been further validated against different sources of observations (Soto‐Navarro et al ; Jordà et al ), including a validation of the surface fields using the Lagrangian trajectories of a set of surface drifters released in the Strait area (Sotillo et al ).…”
