How Proactive Environmental Strategy Facilitates Environmental Reputation: Roles of Green Human Resource Management and Discretionary Slack

Abstract: Based on natural resource-based theory, we examined how firms’ environmental strategies and environmental reputation depended on their green human resource management and discretionary slack. From the perspective of human resource management, we hypothesized that proactive environmental strategy predicted firms’ environmental reputation through the mediation of green human resource management. “…CES is a corporate-level strategy that encompasses sustainable business and environmental issues on top while crafting the strategic planning process of an organization (Das et al, 2019). A prescient CES entails a congruous stream of eco-friendly organizational vision, missions, goals, action plans, and processes designated to minimize negative impact on the ecological environment (Zhao et al, 2020). CES intriguingly enhances the sustainable performance of an organization through effective use and reuse of resources, efficient cost advantage, reducing and recycling of waste, strong customer loyalty, and the creation of innovative capabilities by employees' voluntarism (Wijethilake, 2017).…”

“…EPSs denote the strategies that corporates employ to decrease negative influences on the natural environment caused by corporate activities [4]. However, previous studies on antecedents of EPSs have only two streams to focus on this field, including social and organization factors [4].…”

“…In sum, this work used a potential growth curve model to examine how the effects of GTL of CEOs at the initial time (Time 1) can influence the positive changes of GE of TMTs, which consequently can influence positive changes of adoption of EPSs. Because most past studies of EPSs were cross-sectional surveys [1,[4][5][6] and rare empirical evidence on if the effects of GTL on EPSs are strengthened, weakened, or stable over time. This work examined 501 corporates with its CEOs and TMTs three times over six months that can handle these gaps in the literature of EPSs.…”

“…It was further claimed that there is limited literature and evidence available related to concepts and practical implications of sustainable development which help organizations to attain sustainability [15]. Later on, [16] reported the significance of environmental reputation and proactive environmental strategy of a firm through the lens of natural resource-based view theory (NRBV). The researchers further illustrated that it enhances firm performance, reputation, eco-innovation and environmental performance.…”
