How to improve aesthetics in patients with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS): a SPoRT brace treatment according to SOSORT management criteria

Abstract: Background: Aesthetics is a main goal of both conservative and surgical treatments in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Previously, we developed and validated a clinical scale -the Aesthetic Index (AI)--in order to measure aesthetic impairment and changes during treatment.

“…• is able to improve aesthetics in scoliosis patients, with a prospective not-controlled cohort study [ 52 ] on 34 consecutive AIS patients 13 years old with curves of 32° Cobb with Aesthetic Index (AI) [ 36 ] scores of at least 5/6. At baseline, median AI was 6 (95% IC 5-6), but the score decreased to 3 (95% IC 0-5; p < 0.05) after six months with the brace, and this value was maintained in the 29 who completed the treatment (95% IC 1-6; p < 0.05 with respect to baseline).…”

“…Brace treatment must almost always achieve very good aesthetic body shaping [ 36 ]. It is intended to achieve radiographic results that are compatible with good functioning of the spine in adulthood, while the quality-of-life impact and psychological disturbances due to the brace must be minimised [ 5 , 17 , 37 ].…”

“…This may indicate that the respondents in this study have a much poorer affective association toward the brace, regardless of the color. This could also be explained by the poor user acceptance and affective association of patients toward medical garments 31,34 and it is possible that context would greatly shape affective associations toward the colors used. As such, the feedback or reaction toward color swatches might not be always applicable to real‐world situations or objects 35 .…”

“…Consumers prefer to buy analgesics in a red colored package, 29 and sky blue is preferred as the painted color of a psychological counseling office 30 . Studies have also been conducted on the importance of color preference in developing medical garments for adolescents, 11,31 but to the best of the knowledge of the authors, there are no studies done for older adults. Hence, this study aims to investigate: (a) the color‐affective associations and color preferences of the ASD patients toward flexible brace or similar medical garments, and (b) the ASD patients' requirement color attributes toward flexible brace or similar medical garments.…”

“…The concept of bracing to treat scoliosis reattracted people’s attention in the middle of the 20th century, due to an increase in complications in surgical treatment. Several rigid braces, such as Milwaukee [ 14 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ], Boston [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ], Lyon [ 26 , 27 , 28 ], and Chêneau braces [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ], were developed for treating different scoliosis curves and have different correction principles.…”
