How to improve the sustainability of digital libraries and information Services?

Abstract: Arguing that environmental sustainability is a growing concern for digital information systems and services, this paper proposes a simple methodology for estimation of the energy and environmental costs of digital libraries and information services. It is shown that a number of factors contribute to the overall energy and environmental costs of ICT in general, and digital information systems and services in particular. It is also shown that end-user energy costs play a key role in the overall environmental cos… Show more

“…On the one hand, this helps users save time and effort and reduces trips to the libraries, thus contributing to sustainability. On the other hand, Chowdhury (2014Chowdhury ( , 2016 mentions the high energy cost in the operation of information and communication technology and among end-users and highlights the need for more research in this area.…”

“…This is a critical issue because on the one hand we can see the benefits of using more IT in libraries, but on the other hand increased use of ICT will require more energy and therefore create more GHG emissions, and this will keep on increasing unless appropriate measures are taken to reduce such emissions. More recently a few studies have been conducted to discuss the environmental aspects of a digital library or information service (Chowdhury, 2010, 2012a,2012 b, 2012c, 2016). Moreover, the study results indicate that there is no single answer as to which book format is better from an environmental perspective (Chowdhury, 2012c; Jeswani and Azapagic, 2015; Moberg et al, 2011).…”

“…There are three pillars of sustainability, namely: economic sustainability, social sustainability and environmental sustainability. Environmentally sustainable library and information services have not been discussed or researched widely in the mainstream scientific literature (Chowdhury, 2012a, 2012b, 2012c, 2013, 2014a, 2014b, 2016; Jankowska and Marcum, 2010; Nolin, 2010; Spink, 1995, 1999). The library and information science community has also recognized environmental sustainability and green issues as important (Balog and Siber, 2016; Fourie, 2012; Hauke, 2015; Hauke, et al, 2013; Spodick, 2016).…”
