How to Interpret and Pursue an Abnormal Complete Blood Cell Count in Adults

Abstract: A complete blood cell count (CBC) is one of the most common laboratory tests in medicine. For example, at our institution alone, approximately 1800 CBCs are ordered every day, and 10% to 20% of results are reported as abnormal. Therefore, it is in every clinician's interest to have some understanding of the specific test basics as well as a structured action plan when confronted with abnormal CBC results. In this article, we provide practical diagnostic algorithms that address frequently encountered conditions… Show more

“…Sometimes, it could indicate an underlying problem and that is the reason high WBC would always require further medical evaluation as it could indicate infection, trauma, inflammation, tissue damage, allergy amongst others. It has also been associated with the use of certain medications like corticosteroids, antibiotics, antiepileptic drugs, (Tefferi et al, 2005). The observed increase in WBC in this study could be attributed to any of the aforementioned.…”

“…17 NLR is a practical, cost-effective and valuable marker of inflammatory state that can easily be calculated from CBC tests. 18 It has been found to be a valuable predictor of poor prognosis and long-term mortality in oncological patients, in coronary artery disease, end-stage renal disease and inflammatory diseases such as ulcerative collitis and appendicitis. [19][20][21][22][23][24] When WBC parameter was examined in the current study, there were no significant differences between the patients and the controls in any of the three groups.…”
