The article aims is to analyze the internet utilization patterns of rural households in selected European Union countries, particularly focusing on Poland, and to assess the specificity and level of differentiation in this area between countries. The study divides European Union (EU) countries into clusters based on the share of rural residents' using the internet from 2004 to 2022. Employing Ward's method and k-means clustering with the squared Euclidean distance measure, cluster analysis is used for country grouping. Internet functionalities are analyzed to understand consumer behaviors. The study shows that European countries can be categorized into four distinct groups according to the percentage of rural inhabitants who had access to the internet. Internet functionalities revealed variations in accessing information, scheduling medical appointments, social networking, online courses, and political engagement across these clusters. It was found that digital inequality among rural inhabitants in the EU persists, with varying levels of internet usage and utilization of internet functionalities. The convergence hypothesis suggests that less developed areas experience faster growth in internet usage, potentially reducing disparities. Policies promoting digital inclusion and advanced digital skills training are essential to bridge the digital divide in rural areas. In conclusion, access to internet functionalities, especially in healthcare and education, remains a challenge that requires attention. The study emphasizes the importance of considering cultural and socio-economic contexts in understanding digital inequality. This research sheds light on the digital divide in rural EU regions and highlights the need for targeted interventions to enhance digital inclusion and improve the quality of life for rural residents.

The digital economy is reshaping the global economic landscape, with advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, and virtual reality revolutionizing industries and transforming how people work and live. While the digital economy has promise in terms of improving human capital development, for example, through increased access to education and healthcare services, it also presents challenges, such as job displacement and income inequality. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the digital economy on human development indicators in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, seeking to understand how it influences education, health, and income levels. This paper provides valuable insights for policymakers seeking to enhance the Kingdom’s position in the global human development race by examining the relationship between the digital economy and human development using econometric models. This paper analyzes data from the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program to measure the impact of the digital economy on sustainable human development indicators. The findings show that while the digital economy has negligible or negative influence on other human development indicators, it has a limited beneficial impact on education in the long run. In addition, attaining sustainable human development—which is consistent with Vision 2030—requires expanding the economy beyond the oil sector and fostering scientific and technological progress.

Purpose: Digitalization has been the driving change in creating jobs and increasing economic growth in recent years. However, the digitalization of countries and sectors is uneven. The paper focuses on various factors that have an impact on the economic development and well-being in EU countries. Its purpose is to show the evolution of EU countries in terms of digital transformation and how other indicators, such as e-government, human development index, labour productivity, and economic growth influenced the well-being in EU countries in 2019–2021.Design/methodology/approach: The dataset consists of 15 numerical indicators extracted from Eurostat and World Bank databases. We apply principal component analysis and cluster analysis.Findings and Practical Implications: The main research results show that the first dimension – named the impact of innovation on well-being – is dominated by e-government, the percentage of ICT specialists in total, internet use by individuals, the Human Development Index, the Digitalization Index, the Happiness Indicator, human capital, and the integration of digital technology. The second dimension is characterized by government expenses and productivity. Finally, the third dimension is dominated by the GDP growth rate. 77.67% of the total variance is explained by the first three principal components.Originality: Four clusters have been identified by means of the K-Means clustering algorithm. All four clusters are well determined, with cluster 1 including the three Nordic countries ranking first, followed by cluster 3 of well-developed countries and cluster 4 containing mainly emerging economies.
