“…Abelmoschus manihot has previously been reported to ameliorate interstitial renal fibrosis, proteinuria, and haematuria, inhibit immune reactions, and reduce inflammatory injury in patients with various kidney diseases such as chronic glomerulonephritis and diabetic nephropathy in China. In clinic, an ethanol extract of A. manihot flower is the main components of ''HuangKui Capsule'' (commercial name), which is one of the most commonly used Chinese patent medicines and has played an important role in treating CKD (Tu et al, 2013;Yu et al, 1995).…”

“…According to previous studies (Tu et al, 2013), we adopted the jugular vein injections of ADR (5.0 mg/kg) dissolved in saline to establish the ADRN (adriamycin-induced DOI: 10.3109/13880209.2015.1068337 nephropathy) model rats. The spirit, diet, drinking water, fur color, and activities of the rats in each group were observed every day.…”

“…Phytochemical studies have indicated the total flavonoids extracted from flowers of Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medic (TFA) were the major constituents of the flowers (Lai et al, 2009;Wang et al, 2004;Zhou et al, 2012). TFA has been studied pharmacologically for its antioxidant (Ai et al, 2013;Tu et al, 2013), anticonvulsant , cardioprotective (Fan et al, 2011), anti-inflammatory (Ai et al, 2013;Tu et al, 2013), and neuroprotective actions (Cheng et al, 2006;Liu et al, 2009). As the main components, HuangKui capsules have been widely used to treat chronic glomerulonephritis, diabetic nephropathy and nephrotic syndrome by Chinese medicine practitioners Tu et al, 2013;Zhou et al, 2012).…”

“…It is reported that, HKC in clinic can ameliorate proteinuria and renal dysfunction for the patients with early chronic kidney disease (CKD) (Han and Qiu, 2010;Liu et al, 2011). Our previous animal experiment, as the first step, reveals that HKC can dose-dependently improve renal inflammation and glomerular injury in the model rats with focal segmental glomerular sclerosis (FSGS) (Tu et al, 2013;Zhao et al, 2012). Recently, the increasing clinical evidences in China suggest that HKC can also alleviate renal fibrosis in diabetic nephropathy (DN) patients at the early and mid-term stages (Gao et al, 2014;Su et al, 2009), moreover, the therapeutic mechanism may work through reducing oxidative stress (OS)-related damage in the kidney (Liu et al, 2010;Yu et al, 2012).…”
