Human Adenovirus Type 7 Infection Associated with Severe and Fatal Acute Lower Respiratory Illness and Nosocomial Transmission

Abstract: A 23-year-old male died of severe pneumonia and respiratory failure in a tertiary hospital in Beijing, and 4 out of 55 close contacts developed fever. Molecular analysis confirmed human adenovirus type 7 (HAdV7) as the causative agent. We highlight the importance of early diagnosis and treatment and proper transmission control of HAdV7. CASE REPORT Human adenovirus type 7 (HAdV7) infection is associated with acute respiratory disease syndrome, pharyngoconjunctival fever, pneumonia, and central nervous system d… Show more

“…Recently, more and more ARD outbreaks with severe or even fatal cases caused by HAdV-7 have been reported in Asia, especially in China, which has a large and high-density population161113151628293031. The three recent isolates circulating in Southern China (DG01; 2011), Southwestern China (CQ1198; 2010), and Northwestern China (0901HZ/ShX; 2009) were identified as a re-emergent genome type 7d (HAdV-7d) after approximately 20-year absence in China1.…”

“…In particular, respiratory infections with human adenovirus 7 (HAdV7) have a well-documented association with severe clinical manifestations, nosocomial transmission, prolonged hospitalizations, pulmonary sequela, and deaths ( 1 6 ). Adenovirus pneumonia among immunocompetent adults is still relatively infrequent and therefore attracts considerable attention ( 4 ).…”

“…The analytical sensitivity analysis of tq-PCR assay was carried out using 10-fold dilutions of plasmid range from 10 1 to 10 8 copies/μL and the specificity was evaluated by using 62 other common respiratory viruses-positive samples retrospectively tested by Respiratory Pathogen 13 Detection Kit (13× kit) [15]. The intra-assay coefficients of variation of this assay was tested using three plasmids in three replicates and inter-assay reproducibility was tested in three different days within a week.…”
