Human breast milk: A review on its composition and bioactivity

Abstract: Breast milk is the perfect nutrition for infants, a result of millions of years of evolution, finely attuning it to the requirements of the infant. Breast milk contains many complex proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, the concentrations of which alter dramatically over a single feed, as well as over lactation, to reflect the infant's needs. In addition to providing a source of nutrition for infants, breast milk contains a myriad of biologically active components. These molecules possess diverse roles, both gui… Show more

“…Colostrum, the first milk produced, contains a high concentration of whey proteins, with casein being almost undetectable, whereas the lactose and fat content is lower compared to that in mature milk. 4,9 One of the main feature of colostrum is represented by the high concentration in bioactive compounds, including secretory immunoglobulin (IgA), lactoferrin and leukocytes. 10 The high content of secretory immunoglobulins indicates that the main role of colostrum is immunologic rather than nutritional.…”

“…Mucins are incorporated into the membrane of the milk fat globule. 4 During the digestion process, most proteins are decomposed to free amino acids that are absorbed and utilized as building block for synthetizing new proteins in the body. However, it has to be taken into account that some nutritive proteins, that are partly or well absorbed, may exert biological functions.…”
