Human Breath Gas Analysis in the Screening of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Noninvasive BGA in challenge response studies was successfully applied to GDM diagnosis and offered an insight into metabolic pathways involved. We propose a new approach to the identification of diagnosis thresholds for GDM screening.

“…Niacin lowers insulin effectiveness and can cause an increase in blood glucose levels (BGLs) [172]. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is another form of diabetes [172, 173]. It can develop when a pregnant woman has limited beta cell capacity and cannot respond to the additional insulin demand.…”

“…For multiple dependent variables, in which two or more dependent variables are included, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and canonical correlation analysis are applied. Recently, Halbritter and co-workers [ 165 ] used MANOVA technique to discriminate according to whether the pregnant women had gestational diabetes mellitus, impaired glucose tolerance, or normal glucose tolerance, by means of analysing the women´s breath by PTR-MS and correlating it with the oral glucose tolerance test.…”

“…Oxidative stress has also been analyzed in relation to diabetes mellitus [189]. Aside from the two main types of diabetes, another study reports a number of volatile biomarkers discovered in the breath of patients with gestational diabetes mellitus [190]. A detailed overview of the selected techniques used for breath ana lysis in diabetes mellitus was given by Miekisch et al [191].…”
