Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 Status and Interval Breast Cancer in a Population-Based Cancer Registry Study

Abstract: This population-based cancer registry study demonstrated that HER2-positive tumors account for a substantial proportion of mammographic screening failure. The distribution of biologic characteristics in screen-detected cancers differs from that observed in interval cancers and may account in part for the more aggressive behavior of interval-detected cases.

“…Randomised controlled clinical trials and meta-analyses have consistently demonstrated that biennial screening mammography results in a projected 17% reduction in mortality compared to no screening [8,9]. There have been significant improvements in patient outcomes as a result of continually evolving and improving standards of care, increased community awareness and new treatment modalities for breast cancer [10].…”

“…This result is consistent with previous studies reporting a more aggressive behaviour of IC. 10,11,14,22,24,30,31 This pattern of a more aggressive behaviour associated with IC was also expressed in the biomarkers results. The proportion of cases that were negative for RE or triple negative for RE, RP, and HER2, was higher in IC compared with SD.…”

“…Musolino et al 11 observed that interval tumours (those discovered between screenings), in addition to having a higher histologic grade, proliferation rate and oestrogen receptor negative status, were three to four times more likely to be HER2 positive than screen detected. Tagliabue et al 12 demonstrated that wound fluid and postsurgical serum samples contained growth factors that induced proliferation of surgically removed HER2-positive breast carcinoma cells.…”
