Human induced fish declines in North America, how do agricultural pesticides compare to other drivers?

Abstract: Numerous anthropogenic factors, historical and contemporary, have contributed to declines in the abundance and diversity of freshwater fishes in North America. When Europeans first set foot on this continent some five hundred years ago, the environment was ineradicably changed. Settlers brought with them diseases, animals, and plants via the Columbian Exchange, from the old world to the new, facilitating a process of biological globalization. Invasive species were thus introduced into the Americas, displacing … Show more

“…For example, based on data generated by Pimentel (2000) and compiled by the US FWS (2017) cats (domestic and feral) account for 72% of all bird mortalities in the United States annually (Brain and Anderson 2019; Figure 2), with a further (combined) 25% attributable to collisions with buildings, structures, and vehicles etc., and only 2% attributable to "poisons" (not broken out by household, industrial, or agricultural). Similar trends are evident when mammals and fish are considered (Brain and Anderson 2020;Brain and Prosser 2022). Consequently, a prudent question to ask would be whether we are judiciously focusing our efforts relative to the potential risks presented accordingly.…”

“…The more recent Anthropocene has dramatically shaped demographic trajectories of wildlife through farming, hunting, and logging ( Ceballos et al 2015 ; IPCC 2022 ). Human pressures increased during the colonial era when settlers profoundly altered the land, leading to declines in endemic populations ( Woinarski et al 2015 ; Lindo et al 2016 ; Tavares et al 2019 ; Brain and Prosser 2022 ; Stevens et al 2022 ). Indeed, colonial impact has been associated with the extinction of several species such as Australian rodents and the blue antelope ( Hippotragus leucophaeus ; Roycroft et al 2021 ; Hempel et al 2022 ).…”

“…Historical modifications became an integral part of freshwater ecosystems as we know them today, making the consideration of their historical past indispensable for their conservation and management. Moreover, freshwater ecosystems are particularly responsive to the modification and exploitation of surrounding ecosystems (Brain & Prosser, 2022) and, because of their intrinsic hierarchical structure, disturbances and their legacy can propagate across various levels, affecting a multitude of interconnected landscape and ecological components. We synthesize selected literature to present a comprehensive conceptualization of the legacy formation process, inspired by elements from disturbance ecology and that offers guidance for a practical consideration of legacy in freshwater research and management, for instance as input for numerical models and environmental planning.…”
