Human papillomavirus and Epstein Barr virus in prostate cancer: Koilocytes indicate potential oncogenic influences of human papillomavirus in prostate cancer

Abstract: The presence of both HPV and EBV gene sequences in most of the same normal, benign, and malignant prostate specimens is particularly noteworthy because of recent experimental evidence demonstrating that EBV and HPV can collaborate to increase proliferation of cultured cervical cells. Because the presence of EBV and HPV in normal, benign, and malignant prostate tissues appears to be ubiquitous, it is possible that they are harmless. On the other hand HPV type 18 in particular, has high oncogenic potential and m… Show more

“…These studies were published between 1990 and 2015 and comprised 971 PCa cases in total. The majority of the studies originated from Asia (n=8) (38,40,(43)(44)(45)48,51,56), Europe (n=7) (22,39,42,47,50,53,55) and North America (n=5) (23,49,52,54,57), and the remaining studies originated from South America (n=1) (46) and Oceania (n=2) (6,41 Table I. Characteristics of studies included in the meta-analysis.…”

“…High-risk HPV DNA has been found in some unconventional HPV cancers, such as breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancers, and a causative role has been implied (210)(211)(212)(213). Although known to be associated with human cancers, the potential role of high-risk HPV in the carcinogenic steps of these cancers is controversial.…”

“…Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous herpes virus that is linked to multiple malignancies, including Burkitt’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, gastric cancer esophageal cancer cervical cancer and prostate cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) [1-9]. Latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) encoded by EBV functions as an essential factor in EBV-induced cell transformation and is expressed in many of the malignancies associated with EBV.…”
