Human papillomavirus genotype distribution and factors associated among female sex workers in West Africa

Abstract: Objectives This study aimed to: (1) Estimate HPV prevalence and genotype distribution among female sex workers (FSWs) in Mali and Benin as well as the prevalence of multiple HPV type infections in this group, and (2) Identify potential risk factors associated with high-risk (HR) HPV infections. Methods We analyzed baseline data of 665 FSWs aged ≥ 18 years recruited during a prospective cohort of cervical cancer screening in Cotonou (Benin) and Bamako (Mali) from 2017 to 2018. The Linear Array HPV genotyping … Show more

“…The present study was combined with another one investigating cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection among FSWs [21]. Women were referred by peer educators to FSW-friendly clinics Dispensaire IST (DIST) in Cotonou, Benin, and Clinique des Halles run by ARCAD/SIDA, a national Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), in Bamako, Mali for cervical cancer screening.…”

Each visit also included gynecological examination, vaginal and cervical swabs collection for curable STI testing.…”

“…All women were screened for abnormal cervical lesions using visual inspection with acetic acid and Lugol's iodine (VIA/VILI). A venous blood sample (3 ml) was collected for HIV testing (see previous papers for more details on storage process and banking of specimens (Tounkara et al 2020a, Tounkara et al 2020b.…”

“…Nearly 70% of cervical cancers worldwide are related to high oncogenic risk (HR)-HPV genotypes 16 and 18, but at least 11 other HR-HPV types are also known to be associated with cervical cancer [ 2 , 3 ]. The distribution of HR-HPV genotypes varies by geographic area, demographics, and sexual risk behaviors [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Most HPV infections are cleared spontaneously but may persist and induce the development of precancerous and cancerous lesions [ 7 ].…”
