Human-Robot Conversational Interaction (HRCI)

Abstract: Conversation is one of the primary methods of interaction between humans and robots. It provides a natural way of communication with the robot, thereby reducing the obstacles that can be faced through other interfaces (e.g., text or touch) that may cause difficulties to certain populations, such as the elderly or those with disabilities, promoting inclusivity in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). Work in HRI has contributed significantly to the design, understanding and evaluation of human-robot conversational int… Show more

“…This workshop is being organized by a team of experienced researchers who bring expertise from diverse fields aligned with our objectives. Collectively, the organizers have a track record of publishing on a wide range of topics, including conversational user interfaces [11,18,20,26,27,46,47], human-robot interaction [8,30], multi-modal communication [3,7], and privacy and security [5,6,15,24]. Integrating these disciplines shall facilitate collaboration among our trans-disciplinary participants and bridge the gap between these research areas.…”

“…Human-robot communication can involve various modes, including verbal communication using speech, multimodal interaction involving head movements, eye gaze, and pointing gestures, and nonverbal cues such as facial expressions and hand gestures [27,36] [37] (Rautiainen et al 2022). In addition to verbal communication, nonverbal cues play a crucial role in human-robot interaction, allowing for a more natural and inviting experience [38] (Urakami & Seaborn, 2023).…”

“…Rusan and Mocanu (2022)[25] introduced a framework that detects and recognizes speech messages, converting them into spoken commands for operating system instructions. Carr, Wang, and Wang (2023)[26] proposed a network-independent verbal communication platform for multi-robot systems, which can function in environments lacking network infrastructures McMillan et al (2023) [27]. highlighted the importance of conversation as a natural way of communication between humans and robots, promoting inclusivity in humanrobot interaction Lee et al (2023) [28].…”
