Vestigial tail otherwise called the neuroectodermal appendage is a rare occurrence. Very few cases have been reported in literature. Several congenital anomalies may coexist with vestigial tails. Associated cutaneous stigmata like dermal sinus, lipoma, hyperpigmented skin, hair patch have also been documented. In this study an attempt has been made to investigate the clinical and cytogenetic profile of a female infant with a tail like structure in the lumbosacral region associated with multiple limb defects. Cytogenetic profiles of family members were studied by performing karyotype analysis to look for chromosome level involvement in the development of this condition. The cytogenetic profiles were found to be normal. The tail was excised successfully without neurological deficits and limb defects were surgically corrected.

A Gelatinous Human Tail With Lipomyelocele

We report a female infant who presented with a tail appendage bearing a gelatinous tip and an associated lipomyelocele. Magnetic resonance images revealed the presence of spina bifida and a tract in continuity from the tail to the conus medullaris. The tail was surgically removed. A human tail may be associated with underlying spinal dysraphism. Magnetic resonance or computed tomographic imaging is required in such cases for complete evaluation. This is the first case report of gelatinous-tip human tail.

ÖZET "Human tail"; lumbosakrokoksigeal kaudal bölgede, üzeri cilt ile kaplı protrüzyon olarak gözlenen, nadir görülen, konjenital, embriyonik, vestigial benign bir anomalidir. Klinik, radyolojik, histopatolojik incelemelerle "true tail" ve "pseudo tail" olarak birbirinden ayırd edilmeleri gerekir. Özellikle radyolojik incelemeler preoperatif dönemde bu ayrıcı tanıyı yapmakta büyük öneme sahiptir. Human tail'e diğer konjenital anomaliler eşlik edebilir, spinal disrafizm bu anomalilerde en büyük paya sahiptir ki bu da iyi bir klinik yönetim gerektirmektedir. Bu olgu sunumunda, "true tail" ile doğmuş, sağlıklı bir yenidoğan olgusundan bahsedildi.

Abstract: A true human tail is a rare occurrence and is defined as a caudal, vestigial, midline protrusion with skin covering connective tissue, muscle, vessels and nerves. We report a case of true human tail in a child, which is a very rare happening in humans.
