Hybrid Dynamic Traffic Model for Freeway Flow Analysis Using a Switched Reduced-Order Unknown-Input State Observer

Abstract: This paper introduces a new methodology for reconstructing vehicle densities of freeway segments by utilizing the limited data collected by traffic-counting sensors and developing a macroscopic traffic stream model formulated as a switched reduced-order state observer design problem with unknown or partially known inputs. Specifically, the traffic network is modeled as a hybrid dynamic system in a state space that incorporates unknown inputs. For freeway segments with traffic-counting sensors installed, vehicl… Show more

“…one of the first and key jobs is to establish mixed traffic flow model. The highway network will be as the example to study the observability of mixed traffic flow system, based on modeling methods and results proposed in literature [4][5][6][7][8][9][15][16][17], the mixed traffic flow model is described in the following.…”

“…The observability algorithm on highway segments was presented to placed traffic sensors efficiently to maximize the information collected [3]. Based on the traffic flow model, the optimized placement of traffic sensor network and the observability analysis were also studied [4][5][6][7][8][9]. Many other similar approaches were also applied [10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…An observer was developed to estimate the UIs, and the necessary and sufficient conditions for its existence were presented in [22]. A switched reduced-order state observer design problem with unknown or partially known inputs was formulated to develop a macroscopic traffic stream model [23]. An alternative approach is to model UIs as a parameter conforming to a Markov transition probability, which can be accomplished using a multiple model approach [24].…”
