Hybrid Optical Switching for Data Center Networks

Abstract: Current data centers networks rely on electronic switching and point-to-point interconnects. When considering future data center requirements, these solutions will raise issues in terms of flexibility, scalability, performance, and energy consumption. For this reason several optical switched interconnects, which make use of optical switches and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), have been recently proposed. However, the solutions proposed so far suffer from low flexibility and are not able to provide serv… Show more

“…The c-through [10] and HOS [11] are two examples of hybrid electronic/optical interconnection solutions. In these hybrid interconnect architectures, optical circuit switches (OCS) are employed to provide high capacity for transmitting long-lived and bandwidth-consuming traffic flows (e.g., elephant flows) due to the long reconfiguration time of OCS, and EPS is used to transmit short-lived traffic flows that do not need large bandwidth (e.g., mice flows).…”

“…100µs aggregation time for burst generation and 500KB for burst length was considered. We selected three values of TDC (1,10,20) and five values of stability (100, 200, 300, 400, 500)ms in order to evaluate their impact on performance of the system. Simulation time was set to 2 second.…”
