Hybrid Suspension/Solution Precursor Plasma Spraying of a Complex Ba(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O3 Perovskite: Effects of Processing Parameters and Precursor Chemistry on Phase Formation and Decomposition

Abstract: Ba(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O3 (BMT) has a high melting point and is envisioned as a thermal barrier coating material. In this study, a hybrid suspension/solution precursor plasma spray process with a radio frequency thermal plasma torch is designed to deposit BMT nanostructured coatings. Six combinations of chemical reagents are investigated as coating precursors: one BMT powder suspension and five Ta2O5 suspensions in nitrate-or acetate-based solutions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to evaluate the elemen… Show more

“…A similar hybrid APS-SPPS route with simultaneous feeding of an appropriate solution precursor and commercially available spray-grade powder feedstock is reported to enable fabrication of microstructures with nanostructured and micron-sized features (Lohia et al, 2014). Hou et al (2019) propose a hybrid suspension-solution precursor plasma spray process with a radio-frequency thermal plasma torch and demonstrate it is feasible to deposit Ba(Mg 1/3 Ta 2/3 )O 3 (BMT) nanostructured coatings.…”

“…The Recently, the hybrid processes of thermal spraying were studied. There are two possible hybrid processes which include solution precursor plasma spraying, namely: (i) APS and SPPS shown by [81]; and, (ii) SPS and SPPS [82]. These processes take a profit from the advantages of both methods for new applications.…”

“…There is a possibility of spraying different feedstocks simultaneously, which is called hybrid spraying. The combinations of powder with suspension, powder with solution, and suspension with solution were tested [82,185].…”

“…Some reports studied on the co-spraying of SPPS and SPS to prepare TBCs. Hou et al [92] prepared Ba(Mg 1/3 Ta 2/3 )O 3 (BMT) thermal barrier coatings via SPPS and SPS. Ta 2 O 5 nanoparticle suspension was used for SPS, and barium and magnesium nitrate solution was used for SPPS.…”
