Hydrocarbon gases emitted from vehicles on the road. 1. A qualitative gas chromatography/mass spectrometry survey

Abstract: The gas-phase hydrocarbons >C5 generated by motor vehicles in highway operation were surveyed in the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 1979. The samples were collected on Tenax GC polymer adsorbent and analyzed by glass-capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Approximately 400 vehicle-generated compounds were detected. Of these, over 300 were either completely or partially identified. In the various tunnel samples the same peaks are always present, with relative intensities vary… Show more

“…122 Conventional air analysis for contaminants uses GC, a mature method that has proved very suitable for the determination of VOCs at trace levels, often in combination with a mass spectrometric detector. 123 Air sample collection, storage and transport can be plagued by cross-contamination, degradation and loss.…”

“…The general population is potentially exposed to 2,3-benzofuran (BF 4 ) through its release into the environment as a result of waste incineration (Junk and Ford, 1980) and from exhaust gases from gasoline and diesel engines (Seizinger and Dimitriades, 1972;Hampton et al, 1982). The use of BF in the manufacture of coumaroneindene resins is an industrial hazard and may result in environmental contamination with BF via various waste streams (Budavari, 1989).…”

“…Decalin has been identified in car exhaust fumes from samples collected in the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and in emissions obtained from unvented kerosene space heaters 0273-2300/$ -see front matter Ó 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.yrtph.2013.02.011 (Traynor et al, 1990;Hampton et al, 1982). Decalin is also continuously released into the environment in effluent from petroleum refining and coal tar distillation and in the exhaust from the combustion of gasoline and diesel fuels (HSDB, 2004;NTP, 1992).…”
