Hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer during coating of tablets in a spouted bed

Abstract: The results of experimental investigations on the hydrodynamics of flows through conical beds of tablets are presented. An equation for predicting the minimum spouting flow rate, developed earlier on the basis of the Ergun equation, has been verified applying a known equation for tablets. The results of investigations on fluid‐to‐particle heat and mass transfer coefficients are in agreement with theoretical values obtained from correlation equations describing drying kinetics.

“…Nowadays they are used for drying grain agricultural products (Devahastin et al 1998;Kudra et al 2001), dispersed materials (Kmiec and Szafran 2000), paste-like materials on inert bodies (Kudra et al 1989;Arsenijevic et al 2004), slurries and solutions (Tia et al 1995). The SB dryers have also been used for coating particles to obtain products with special properties, such as tablets (Kucharski and Kmiec 1983;Publio and Oliveira 2004). A special area of application of this type of equipment in the pharmaceutical industry is the coating operation for producing functional particles of around 30 µm, which can be used, for example, as injectable suspensions for cancer therapy (Arimoto et al 2004).…”

“…(8) with the experimental data indicates the Reynolds number exponent found to be 0.779 whilst the Reynolds number exponents in conventional spouted beds reported in literature are given in the typical range of 0.47-0.64 (Kmiec, 1975;Kucharski & Kmiec, 1983). This implies the transfer of heat in the spout region for the two-dimensional spouted bed to be governed by the relative combined effects of lamina and turbulent boundary layers.…”

“…The technology today has been successfully applied to the drying of paste, granulation, tablet coating, combustion and gasification of coal and other chemical processes [1][2][3][4]. One of its advantages is that it can guarantee good contacts between gas and solid particles.…”
