Hydrogels for dermal and transdermal drug delivery

Abstract: A painless and non-invasive method to deliver drugs using dermal and transdermal administration routes is expanding for more than 30 years as it reduces the risk of drug overdoses that...

“…The Cur-Car-IL@Ilo hydrogel not only has the characteristics of IL but also has the unique moisture retention, adhesion, and pore structure of the hydrogel, which increases skin permeability. Moreover, after 24 h of penetration, the skin still maintains good skin integrity (Figure e), indicating that curcumin in Cur-Car-IL@Ilo hydrogel can effectively deliver through the skin and has potential application value in the local treatment of psoriasis. , …”

“…Compared to other delivery methods, curcumin-based IL liposomes can self-compress and penetrate the pores between keratinocytes that are decimal times larger than themselves after deformation. They can efficiently permeate and diffuse into the skin and effectively deliver the required drug-active ingredients, overcoming the related problems of traditional liposomes retaining the skin epidermal layer during transdermal administration (Figure a). At 24 h of percutaneous penetration, the cumulative penetration of Cur-Bet-IL-Lip was 49%, while Cur-Bet-IL was 36% (Figure b), indicating that IL liposomes can promote the penetration of curcumin.…”

“…The flow behavior of the semisolid product taken from gauzes was modelled by the Carreau equation (Equation (1)), as described previously [13].…”

“…These features are deeply related to the rheological properties of the formulation, such as viscosity, elasticity, thixotropy, and flow [12]. Indeed, the rheological behavior affects the spreadability of semisolid products on the gauze, its adhesion to the skin, and the release profile of APIs into the skin [13,14].…”
