Hydrographical variability on the French continental shelf in the Bay of Biscay, during the 1990s

Abstract: A synthesis of 9 years of hydrographic measurements, acquired during approximately 25 cruises (1992-2000) on the French continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay, is presented. The main focus is upon salinity distribution, as it is little known in this area. The whole of the data set covers 11 months of the year, with some sampling fields repeated several times a year, for multiple years. This timeseries allows temperature and salinity distributions to be studied together with their seasonal, interannual and meso… Show more

“…The seasonal changes of the hydrological structures have already been described (Lazure and Jegou, 1995;Koutsikopoulos and Le Cann, 1996;Puillat et al, 2004). The following synthetic graph represents the location of the main hydrological characteristics (Fig.…”

“…Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay winter convective mixing dominates the supply of nutrients (Williams et al, 2000;Puillat et al, 2004;Cianca et al, 2007). Wind-driven cooling and deep convective mixing lower the surface temperature and nutrient rich water is supplied to the euphotic zone from depth to fuel phytoplankton growth, which predominantly occurs in the spring following restratification of the water column (Sverdrup, 1953;Chiswell et al, 2011).…”

“…This situation is most common in summer, though with higher salinity than in spring. This seasonal variability has recently been confirmed through analysis of in situ hydrographical measurements (Puillat et al, 2003(Puillat et al, , 2004.…”

“…Along the continental slope, the subtidal current measured by current-meters and drifting buoys reaches ~5 to ~10 cm s -1 at ~500 m depth, and a northward flow is apparent (Pingree andLe Cann, 1990, Le Cann et al, 1997). Unfortunately, observations on the French continental shelf of the bay are scarce (Le Cann, 1982;Pingree and Le Cann, 1989;Koutsikopoulos and Le Cann, 1996;Puillat et al, 2004). The barotropic tidal characteristics over the French shelf have been investigated by Le Cann (1990): the semi diurnal component (M 2 ) is dominant, and instantaneous tidal current strength is correlated with the topography and width of the shelf.…”
