Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry for acidic herbicides and metabolites analysis in fresh water

Abstract: Theoretical papers and environmental applications of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) have been published for a wide range of analytes, but to our knowledge, no study focused on acidic herbicides (e.g., triketones, phenoxy acids, sulfonylurea, and acidic metabolites of chloroacetanilides). Matrix effects are the main obstacle to natural sample analysis by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MS) via an electrospray ionization (ESI) interface. Therefore, we paid part… Show more

“…Three additional experimental units, used as abiotic positive controls, were filled with culture medium contaminated with the highest concentration of metolachlor. The three concentrations correspond to (i) environmentally realistic exposure concentrations (1 µg.L -1 ) in the Leyre watershed (Roubeix et al, 2012) or other rivers of the area (Fauvelle et al, 2014), and (ii) for the higher ones, concentrations of the same order of magnitude as those used in other ecotoxicological studies (Debenest et al, 2009;Roubeix et al, 2011a). The cultures were thus exposed to these four treatments over 7 days, during which samples were taken for chemical and biological measurements.…”

“…80% acetonitrile is often required, significantly increasing LODs. In environmental analysis, HILIC was applied for the targeted analysis of polar herbicides [71], pesticides [72], and pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics [17], drugs of abuse [16], cytostatics [73], antidiabetics [24,74], and contrast agents [75,76]. HILIC was successfully used as a complementary method to RPLC for the non-target screening of emerging polar organic compounds in wastewater [77].…”

“…The selection of an SPE sorbent that includes both polar and nonpolar moieties was the first requirement for retaining the whole range of target chemicals (1.6 < log Kow < 9.5). Among them, Oasis HLB is identified as the best candidate for extracting a wide range of contaminants (Kaserzon et al, 2012;Fauvelle et al, 2015;Net et al, 2015a). An important SPE step was the selection of an appropriate elution fraction.…”
