Hydrophobically Modified Polyacrylamide Synthesis and Application in Water Treatment

Abstract: This review examines recent advances in the synthesis of hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide. The synthetic method includes direct copolymerization and post polymerization, and direct copolymerization mainly includes heterogeneous copolymerization, homogeneous copolymerization, micellar polymerization, microemulsion polymerization, soap-free polymerization and polymerization in supercritical CO2. In addition, the application of hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide in water treatment is examined. Based o… Show more

“…Based on the available literature and the results of the laboratory synthesis process [ 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ], the following six factors were selected as significant parameters for investigating the grafting efficiency of glutathione: temperature, stirring rate, polyacrylamide/glutathione mass ratio (P/G), reaction time, initial pH, and formaldehyde concentration. Since the grafted polyacrylamide–glutathione contains sulfhydryl groups capable of chelating cadmium ions, these parameters will directly impact the cadmium ion removal efficiency of the final product.…”

“…Due to the randomness of this process, hydrophobic micro blocks are randomly distributed in the polymer chain. Considering the influence of hydrophobic monomers on polymer solubility and the polymerization inhibition of surfactants, the proportion of each component should be strictly controlled to obtain the best supramolecular aggregates [ 113 , 114 ].…”

“…It can aggregate the colloidal substances and particulate matters suspended in the liquid to form larger flocs, and then promote the settlement of these particles from the stable suspension (Salehizadeh et al 2018). As the core of flocculation, flocculants' characteristics directly determine the efficiency of water Responsible Editor: Angeles Blanco treatment (Liao et al 2014). According to the chemical composition, the flocculant can be divided into inorganic coagulants and organic flocculants.…”
