Hydroxyapatite Obtained via the Wet Precipitation Method and PVP/PVA Matrix as Components of Polymer-Ceramic Composites for Biomedical Applications

Abstract: The aspect of drug delivery is significant in many biomedical subareas including tissue engineering. Many studies are being performed to develop composites with application potential for bone tissue regeneration which at the same provide adequate conditions for osteointegration and deliver the active substance conducive to the healing process. Hydroxyapatite shows a great potential in this field due to its osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties. In the paper, hydroxyapatite synthesis via the wet precipi… Show more

“…The highest differences were observed during first 24 h of the swelling. Analogous results were presented in other works [ 36 ]. The use of the crosslinking agent PEGDA 575 resulted in the synthesis of polymer matrices consisting of shorter polymer chains compared to the chains occurring in the structure of materials obtained using PEGDA 700.…”

“…PVP/PVA-based composite materials containing HAp were prepared according to procedure described previously in [ 36 ]. Briefly, the aqueous solutions of polymers—PVA and PVP—were mixed with a ceramic phase (HAp) and selected collagen, i.e., fish collagen or bovine collagen.…”

“…Preparation of the ceramic powder was described in our previous article. 23 Briefly, HAp was obtained via the wet precipitation method. As precursors, hydrated calcium nitrate (Ca(NO 3 ) 2 4H 2 O) at a concentration of 0.60 mol/L, and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NH 4 H 2 PO 4 ) at a concentration of 0.36 mol/L were applied.…”

“…Consequently, they are commonly applied in the form of powder, bulk, and coating, for various biomedical applications including bone tissue engineering, maxillofacial, dentistry and as coatings on metallic implants [ 16 , 17 ]. Importantly, nHAp-based materials are highly reactive and interact with biological entities forming chemical bonds with the adjacent biological tissue [ 18 ].…”
