Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose as a polymeric corrosion inhibitor for aluminium

Abstract: Purpose -The paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as corrosion inhibitor for aluminium in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution. Design/methodology/approach -This study was carried out using weight loss and electrochemical techniques. Inhibition efficiency was determined by comparing the corrosion rates in the absence and presence of inhibitor system. Quantum chemical computations were performed using density functional theory to assess the parameters responsible for the inhibi… Show more

“…Polymers are solubility property in aqueous medium. Some reports have highlighted the enhancement of the corrosion inhibition efficiency of polymeric compounds by combination with metals cations [15][16][17][18] or halide anions [19][20][21][22]. In our laboratory, we have equally demonstrated the beneficial influence of halide ions particularly iodide ions on protection effectiveness of polymers [23,24].…”

“…Meanwhile, HPMC has a good capability for distributing and preventing grease and gas penetration [ 23 ], and is therefore used in sustainable manufacturing [ 24 ]. Moreover, owing to its biocompatibility [ 25 ] and decomposability [ 26 , 27 ], it is also used as a corrosion inhibitor [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. Traditional HPMC is soluble in water; thus, it is not suitable for a water and high humidity environment.…”

“…Acid wash solutions have been widely used for surface preparation of metals in many industries. Corrosion inhibitors are added to these solutions in small amounts to reduce metal dissolution and acid consumption (El Issami et al, 2007;Okechi Arukalam et al, 2014;Zaabar et al, 2014;Elayyachy et al, 2004;El-Haddad et al, 2013;Mobin et al, 2013;Hamani et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2004;Tebbji et al, 2005;Abd El-Maksoud and Fouda, 2005). In this regard, different kinds of inhibitors like mercapto and indole derivatives are used in acid wash solutions.…”
