Hyperbaric oxygen therapy of olfactory dysfunction in diabetic neuropathy with type 2 diabetes mellitus and a new definition Diabetic Olfactopathy

Abstract: When compared to normal individuals, type 2 diabetic neuropathy can cause an olfactory dysfunction, and a statistically significant improvement in olfaction can be obtained with HBO therapy. This is the first study demonstrating that the HBO therapy can play a role in treating olfactory dysfunctions suffered by the patients with diabetic olfactory neuropathies.

“…Bombin et al 1712 found that factors such as inflammation and duration of illness with SLE, as well as secondary anxiety and depression, usually mandates multidisciplinary evaluation in these patients. Another important cause of olfactory disorders among autoimmune diseases is IgG4‐related disease, which has been associated with type 1 autoimmune pancreatitis, chronic sialoadenitis, kidney disease, periaortitis, and dacryoadenitis 1713 . Yagi‐Nakanishi et al 1714 found that 52% of these patients had OD.…”

“…These complications include but are not limited to diabetic foot ulcers, diabetic olfactopathy, cervical necrotizing fasciitis of odontogenic origin, and diabetes related atherosclerosis. 6 , 23 , 24 , 27 To our best knowledge, there is only one preclinical study, which evaluated the effectiveness of the HBO treatment on implant osseointegration in diabetic subjects. 18 The study was conducted in the tibiae of rats.…”
