Hyperbranched carbosilane oxazoline-macromonomers: polymerization and coupling to a trimesic acid core

Christian Lach,
Ralf Hanselmann,
Holger Frey
et al.

Abstract: Attachment of oxazoline-based hyperbranched macromonomers to a trimesic acid core affording trimers of the hyperbranched fragments as well as polymerization of the oxazoline groups is reported. Polymerization and copolymerization with 2-phenyl-1,3-0xazoline were investigated for two macromonomers (aw = 1700 and 8000, respectively), resulting in hy~rbranched analogs of combburst polymers. Homopolymerization of the macromonomers yielded a degree of polymerization DP = 15. Hyperbranched trimers and the polyethyle… Show more

“…It is to Frey's credit that a hyperbranched carbosilane macromonomer with a oxazoline polymerizable group was developed and successfully subjected to a cationic polymerization. [41] Through a careful optimization of the polymerization conditions DP values of DP ¼ 15-20 could be reached. As mentioned above, the main issue here was to achieve the highest possible concentration for the polymerizable group and to still have a stirrable reaction mixture.…”

“…Copolymers with a reduced dendron density along the backbone were also prepared by the same procedure. [41] Meanwhile, Frey has extended this work to polybutadienes to which methyldi(undecenyl)silane was grafted by hydrosilylation, but this could not be completely controlled regardless of whether the silane was added to the backbone olefins or to the ones it carried at the termini. [42] …”

“…The versatile 2-alkyl-2-oxazoline polymerization chemistry allows the synthesis of complex architectures such as block copolymers [11][12][13], star-shaped [14][15][16] or hyperbranched [17][18][19] polymers. Star polymers are composed of at least three linear arms spreading from a low molecular weight central core.…”
