Hypertension and the eye

Abstract: Assessment of hypertensive retinopathy signs may convey additional prognostic information on the risk of end-organ damage and may alert for urgent systemic management or even preventive systemic therapies. Further development of retinal vascular imaging and computerized system may provide a significant tool to improve the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of hypertension in clinical practice.

“…Hypertension is a risk factor for numerous eye conditions, including those directly related to hypertension such as hypertensive retinopathy, choroidopathy and optic neuropathy [25], and other indirectly related diseases. Hypertension has been identified as a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy (DR) [26], and tighter blood pressure control reduced progression of retinopathy and reduced deterioration in visual acuity in the UKPDS study [27].…”

“…Screening and appropriate interventions for the chronic and sustained effects of elevated blood pressure levels can prevent complications and sequelae of retina vascularization. In addition, findings regarding its microvasculature may determine the acquisition of new therapies that satisfactorily reach the posterior portion of the eye and its structures, since this aspect is still challenging, despite advances in ocular pharmacology [17]. Thus, the purpose of the study was to investigate the presence of FAZ area changes in patients with systemic arterial hypertension using OCT-A.…”

“…В связи с ростом распространенности сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний, коморбидности и осложнений острее встает вопрос о патогенезе и подходах фармакологической коррекции ишемически-реперфузионных повреждений сетчатки [1]. Состояние сосудов сетчатки может быть непосредственно оценено, предоставляя важную информацию о риске возникновения гипертонии [2].…”
