Recently obesity, dyslipidemia and uricemia has been implemented in cancer progression and development. Therefore, in the present study lipid profile, renal function and uric acid levels have been evaluated and their association has been assessed in HPV-mediated cervical cancer (CaCx) patients. Women diagnosed with CaCx were tested for HPV infection using conventional PCR. Anthro-demographic and clinicopathological characteristics were recorded and samples from patients (n = 103) and healthy women (n = 108) were analyzed for dyslipidemia (total cholesterol, TC; triglycerides, TG; high-density lipoprotein, HDL; low-density lipoprotein, LDL levels), serum urea, creatinine and uric acid using commercially kits. All statistical analysis was done using SPSS (ver.21.0) and GraphPad. Out of 103 CaCx patients, 86 were HPV + ve and 17 were HPV-ve. BMI was associated with HPV + ve with a higher risk (1.55 folds) while cholesterol was relatively significant in HPV-ve cases with a 1.01 folds crude OR. TG, HDL and LDL were found significantly associated with an increased adjusted OR in HPV + ve cases. Urea levels were found significantly higher in HPV + ve as compared to HPV-ve (1.63 vs 1.12 folds Crude OR). while the adjusted OR became deceased in HPV + ve CaCx patients (1.10) compared to HPV-ve CaCx patients (1.31). Both creatinine and uric acid showed significantly higher adjusted OR (11.07, 1.53) in HPV + ve cases as compared to HPV-ve (10.37, 1.46). Dyslipidemia, renal dysfunction, and uricemia were found clinically significant in CaCx patients. Therefore, TG, HDL, LDL, serum urea, creatinine, and uric acid can be used as prognostic biomarkers for HPV-mediated cervical cancer.

Background: In India, cervical cancer (CaCx) ranks second with >1.2 lakh new cases and >77,000 deaths. The main causing agent of cervical cancer is human papillomavirus (HPV). Recently, anthro-demographic and clinico-pathological factors have been implicative of cancer development and progression. Objective: To evaluate the association of anthro-demographic, clinico-pathological and biochemical risk factors in cervical cancer. Methods: CaCx patients were tested for HPV infection using conventional PCR. Anthro-demographic and clinico-pathological characteristics were recorded and samples from patients (n=103) and healthy women (n=108) were analyzed for lipid profile, serum urea, creatinine and uric acid using commercial kits. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS (ver.21.0) and GraphPad. Results: Out of 103 CaCx patients, 86 were HPV+ve and 17 HPV-ve. Anthro-demographic factors like literacy, socio-economic status and obstetrics were found significantly associated with cervical cancer. BMI was associated with cervical cancer (1.18 folds higher risk). Total cholesterol (TC); triglycerides (TG); high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were found significantly associated with an increased adjusted OR in CaCx patients. Urea levels were found significantly higher in patients (1.11 folds crude OR vs 1.31 adjusted OR). Similarly, creatinine levels were significantly higher in patients (2.64 folds crude OR vs 3.37 adjusted OR).

Elevated Uric acid levels in humans have been associated with cancer, though the pathogenic mechanism is still unclear. The present study attempts to investigate if elevated uric acid levels could be used to investigate the pre-malignant lesions leading to cervical cancer. The study which was carried out at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Benin Teaching Hospital Benin City and Department of Chemical Pathology, Edo University Iyamho, Edo state Nigeria, between August, 2017 and January 2019, examined the capacity of detecting Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) early with serum uric acid in order to increase the chances of survival of women at risk. A total of 197 female participants were recruited for the study. Based on histological diagnosis, they were grouped as CIN 1, CIN 2 and CIN 3. The control group were negative for CIN. Venous blood was obtained from participants and serum uric acid levels were determined using standard laboratory methods. The benchmark for serum uric acid levels in diagnosing CIN presented in this study was at 6.55 mg/dL. The probability that uric acid level higher than 6.55 mg/dL indicate the disease probabilty was 93.1%. The age category within the CIN group with the highest level of uric acid was 31-40 years (10.86 mg/dL). The use of serum uric acid as an excellent biomarker for the diagnosis of CIN is therefore suggested due to its high sensitivity.
