Hypnosis and communication reduce pain and anxiety in peripheral intravenous cannulation: Effect of Language and Confusion on Pain During Peripheral Intravenous Catheterization (KTHYPE), a multicentre randomised trial

Abstract: Background: Clinicians traditionally warn patients of pain before peripheral i.v. cannulation (PIVC). However, using words related to pain or undesirable experiences can result in greater pain and anxiety. The use of positive words can improve pain perception and subjective patient experience. We aimed to compare the effects of three types of communication, including hypnotic communication, on pain, comfort, and anxiety in patients during PIVC. Methods: The Effect of Language and Confusion on Pain During Perip… Show more

“…Once in the OR, the patient is monitored with the standard equipment (EKG, noninvasive blood pressure, and pulse oximeter), a facial mask (capnomask) with oxygen is also provided. Then, a venous catheter is placed on the hand on the same side as the tumor localization while the patient is still in trance, and confusing language is associated with increasing comfort [27]. Then, the intravenous sedation begins with dexmedetomidine (0.3-0.5 mg*kg -1 *h -1 ), a hypnotic that acts as a highly selective α-agonist that can provide analgesia and anxiolysis without compromising the airway patency.…”

“…L'étude KTYPE, multicentrique et randomisée, vise à combler cette lacune. 7 Fusco et coll. ont étudié l'effet de la communication sur la douleur ressentie lors de la pose d'une voie veineuse périphérique (VVP) à la main chez près de 300 patients adultes avant chirurgie élective, dans trois centres hospitaliers en France et Belgique.…”

“…Anxiety was measured using the NRS. The NRS is also effective in evaluating anxiety because it is validated and self-evaluated by the subjects [27]. In this study, anxiety was measured in centimeters from 0 "no anxiety at all" to 10 "very severe anxiety.…”
