Hypolipidemic effect of β-caryophyllene to treat hyperlipidemic rats

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of β-caryophyllene on hypercholesterolemia using a model of hyperlipidemia induced by Triton WR-1339 in rats, as well as its possible effect on hepatic antioxidant enzymes. Thus, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol were measured in serum, while reactive oxygen species (ROS), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutayl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA… Show more

“…In contrast to the studies described herein, other investigators have reported hypolipidemic effects of BCP [58][59][60][61]. These observations were detected, in vivo, under both hyperlipidemic and hypercholesterolemic conditions.…”

“…These observations are consistent, in part, with the findings of a recent study using Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemia in rats. ( 38 ) This study found that BCP reduced total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, did not increase HDL cholesterol, inhibited HMG-CoA reductase activity and ameliorated the antioxidant system.…”
