Hysterosalpingography: A Reemerging Study

Abstract: Hysterosalpingography (HSG) has become a commonly performed examination due to recent advances and improvements in, as well as the increasing popularity of, reproductive medicine. HSG plays an important role in the evaluation of abnormalities related to the uterus and fallopian tubes. Uterine abnormalities that can be detected at HSG include congenital anomalies, polyps, leiomyomas, surgical changes, synechiae, and adenomyosis. Tubal abnormalities that can be detected include tubal occlusion, salpingitis isthm… Show more

“…The fallopian tubes are the initial sites of infection in majority of cases (1). In most cases, tuberculous involvement of the fallopian tube occurs by the hematogenous route from a TB focus elsewhere, usually pulmonary or osseous, leading to endosalpingitis (4). There can also be direct involvement of the peritoneal surface of the tubes from an adjacent intra-abdominal or peritoneal focus, leading to exosalpingitis (5).…”

“…Peritubal adhesions prevent contrast material from spilling into the abdominal cavity and distributing freely. 5,6 HSG also has a role in evaluating the uterine cavity and cervix, as uterine cavity abnormalities can be a contributing cause of subfertility in women. Abnormal uterine findings are reported in as many as 50 % of women with recurrent implantation failure.…”

“…This was irrespective to either the laterality of the tubal block (unilateral vs. bilateral) or to the site of the tubal block (distal vs proximal). Likewise, patients with blocked tubes experienced more pain during HSG 31 and during hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography 32 . Although these techniques differ than hysteroscopy, they all aim to distend the uterine cavity by instillation of fluid.…”
