Aniba subbullata (Lauraceae), a new species from the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil with notes on the leaf epidermis of congeneric species

Abstract: A new plant species from Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, Aniba subbullata, is described and illustrated. Its putative relationships within the genus are discussed, and an identification key is provided for distinguishing it from previously known species in that state. We also provide illustrations and comments on micromorphological features of leaves of this new species, particularly of the abaxial surface, comparing them to those of congeneric species and showing that they are useful for its recognition.

Baitello (2003a) did not accept either synonym, which has been endorsed by Ribeiro et al (2018) and here by us. Specimens from Bahia present the same number of secondary veins per side of the leaf (7–12) as reported by Baitello (2003a) for collections of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.…”

“…Bahian specimens can present up to 14 secondary veins per side. Aniba subbullata was described by Ribeiro and Moraes (Ribeiro et al, 2018), from X‐ray images of the same specimens analyzed here, as bearing leaves with eucamptodromous‐brochidodromous venation, 6–8(–11) secondary veins per side, imperfect reticulation, randomly arranged (not oriented), irregular areoles, and mainly multibranched or rarely absent freely ending veinlets. Our results from cleared leaves, however, have shown that areoles are well developed instead of imperfect, as previously interpreted from X‐ray images alone.…”
