‘I Believe in That Version of the Future’. Cli-Fi and Design Fictions as Dialogical Frameworks for Expert Engagements

Abstract: Abstract:The Design for Sustainability community has highlighted the importance of engaging different societal stakeholders and experts in discussions of how to achieve sustainability. The work we present is situated within a research project exploring 'How climate goals can be portrayed to explore individual's' carbon footprint'. In this paper we present a dialogical tool to engage experts in the discussion of issues related to moral, ethical and societal aspects in the transition towards a low emission socie… Show more

“…Previous studies have already signposted the importance of foresight in informing design processes (Ferrulli, Giraldo Nohra, et al, 2019;Gordon et al, 2019;Ojasalo & Ojasalo, 2015). The current complexity, uncertainty and volatility of our macro environment makes it essential for organizations to adopt a longer-thinking timeframe for their strategic plans, so that their service offering remains attractive in the future (Bühring & Liedtka, 2018) and they can not only cope with the effects of climate change but rather contribute to a more sustainable future (Reitsma et al, 2017).…”

“…One particular area of interest has been how the combination of design and foresight can be used as a core method to foster longer-term thinking and to instill more sustainable ways of thinking (Reitsma et al, 2017). Here, studies are sparse and little has been said about how the combination of service design and foresight can foster longer-term and sustainable practices in design projects.…”

“…Their findings support the idea that a design approach can foster more inclusive governance processes. Reitsma et al [103] studied how climate fiction stories can be used as a prompt to engage different societal stakeholders and experts in debates around moral, ethical, and societal issues in the transition towards a low-emission society. The authors suggest how these stories can potentially "be extended as a tool to back-cast societal change and policy making" [103].…”

“…In this section, we describe the design process, in which we explored a balance between amount of information and detail we give, while aiming to connect to people on an emotional level, without steering towards climate anxiety. Our explorations were informed by ten interviews and a workshop (see Reitsma et al (2017) with experts in the field of carbon footprint data (for example in life cycle assessment and policy making). Our own research team consisted of five researchers with expertise in digital service development, anthropology, interaction design, experience design and industrial design.…”
