CAVE: Making Collective Virtual Narrative: Best Paper Award

Abstract: CAVE is a shared narrative six degrees of freedom (6DoF) virtual reality experience. In 3.5 days, 1,927 people attended its premiere at SIGGRAPH 2018. Thirty participants at a time each saw and heard the same narrative from their own individual location in the room, as they would when attending live theater. CAVE set out to disruptively change how audiences collectively experience immersive art and entertainment. Inspired by the social gatherings of theater and cinema, CAVE resonated with viewers in powerful a… Show more

“…An asymmetric co-occurrence matrix is created by calculating the concepts' relative co-occurrence frequencies. This matrix produces a two-dimensional concept map using a proprietary clustering algorithm based on Audio First [152][153][154][155][156] Audio and Multimodal Integration [157][158][159][160][161][162][163][164][165][166] Audio in Multimodal Comparison [167] Multimodal Experience [168][169][170][171][172][173][174][175] the spring-force model for the many-body problem [83]. The correctness of each concept in this semantic network generates a third hierarchical dimension, which displays the more general parent concepts at the higher levels.…”

“…Multichannel audio can be composed of similar or different speakers in terms of frequency reproduction (frequency response). In the reviewed papers, some particular multichannel sets have been identified in two works [55,157]. The former uses four bone conduction speakers installed in a headband to create audio spatialisation and orient the user in a cultural site using GPS and compass sensors.…”

“…There are some examples of VR being used for colocated social interaction. CAVE brings all immersants into the same co-located virtual space using avatars [4]. Despite being a passive experience, the presence of audience members acknowledges the social context and allows participants to share in the experience.…”
