eReefs: An operational information system for managing the Great Barrier Reef

Abstract: eReefs is a comprehensive interoperable information platform that has been developed for the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region to provide users with access to improved environmental intelligence allowing them to assess past, present, and future conditions, as well as management options to mitigate the risks associated with multiple and sometimes competing uses of the GBR. eReefs is built upon an integrated system of data, catchment and marine models, visualisation, reporting and decision support tools that span … Show more

“…1) currently monitored by the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) National Reference Station (NRS) Network 41 . In contrast, an extensive reef water quality program has been implemented for the GBR with the contextual data publicly available within the eReefs platform 68 . eReefs integrates a hydrodynamic model (predicting key environmental conditions such as temperature and salinity) and a biogeochemical model (water chemistry and ecological processes driving the water chemistry) to generate estimates with a high spatial and temporal resolution for a vast variety of environmental conditions across the GBR, from inshore reefs to the open ocean.…”

“…A large, multi-agency collaboration has developed the eReefs coupled hydrodynamic, sediment and biogeochemical model that simulates at multiple scales the environmental conditions of the GBR [ 17 , 18 ]. The project provides ∼1 and ∼4 km resolution hindcast and near real time simulations of hydrodynamic and biogeochemical quantities.…”

“…The MODIS AQUA based aerosol data set was produced using a three-layer perceptron ANN trained by simulations of a coupled ocean-atmosphere radiative transfer model. An earlier version of the method can be found in [44,45] for MERIS, which was further developed as part of the CSIRO eReefs project [46] where it was extended to MODIS and VIIRS. Specific details of this aerosol data, as well as validations, are available in [23].…”
