krn1, a major quantitative trait locus for kernel row number in maize

Abstract: Summary Kernel row number is a fundamental component of maize (Zea mays) yield and an important target for maize breeding. The revolutionary transition from the two‐rowed teosinte to maize with increased kernel row numbers dramatically enhanced yields during domestication. Kernel row number is controlled by many quantitative trait loci (QTLs), however most genes responsible for these QTLs remain uncharacterised and the molecular genetic mechanisms are unknown. Here, we combined map‐based cloning and associat… Show more

“…Accumulating evidence showed that AP2 family genes play pivotal roles in regulating plant growth and development (Scheres and Krizek, 2018; Dipp-Alvarez and Cruz-Ramirez, 2019; Jiang et al, 2019; Wang et al, 2019a). Arabidopsis AtANT was one of the first genes in the family that were functionally characterized; it regulates organ size, floral meristem patterning, and plant defense pathways (Elliott et al, 1996; Krizek et al, 2016).…”

“…In the ids1 mutant, the spikelet meristem becomes indeterminate and produces additional florets (Chuck et al, 2008). It was also reported that maize AP2-like gene glossy15 regulates leaf epidermal cell identity (Moose and Sisco, 1996) and kernel row number 1 (krn1) enhanced kernel row numbers (Wang et al, 2019a).…”

“…Therefore, linkage mapping and association mapping have been performed in naturally varying populations with the aim of identifying more elite natural alleles controlling KRN. Although many quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to KRN were identi ed by linkage mapping in biparental segregating populations, few have been successfully cloned due to their small genetic effects, except for KRN4 [12] and KRN1 [13]. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of KRN have also been conducted and revealed many quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) [14][15][16].…”

“…The analysis of key genes for crop yield traits and their genetic regulatory networks is a scientific problem that must be solved for the improvement of crop yields. APETALA2/ethylene response factor (AP2/ERF), auxin response factors (ARFs) and MADS genes are key factors in grain yield traits and crop domestication (Harrop et al, 2019;Li et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2019).…”
