Phytopythium: origin, differences and meaning in modern plant pathology

Abstract: The genus Phytopythium is a relatively new group of organisms distinguished from the Pythium genus. These are organisms closely related to Pythium and Phytophthora, with similar structure and biology. Despite many similarities, this genus is characterised by several morphological features that allow it to be easily identified. Until now, more than 20 species belong to this genus, most of which are saprophytic organisms. However, there is also a group of species particularly dangerous to plants. These species i… Show more

“…The closest relative from oomycetes, Phytopythium paucipapillatum, was isolated in South Africa, and may be a soil inhabitant [45]. The genus Phytopythium includes more than 20 species, most of which are saprophytic [46]. Pedospumella sinomuralis soil colourless Chrysophyta was described in China, 795 m asl [47].…”

“…Phytopythium genusunun ortaya çıkışını özetlemek gerekirse, Pythium genusundan ayrılan ve ona göre taksonomik olarak daha genç bir genus olduğu söylenebilir (Bala ve ark., 2010;Rai ve ark., 2020;Tkaczyk, 2020). Bu genus, birçok Pythium ve Phytophthora türünün de yaşam koşullarını sürdürdüğü ortam koşullarıyla güçlü bir şekilde ilişkilidir (Nam & Choi, 2019).…”

“…This genus has long been included in the family Pythiaceae , within the group of oomycetes, but was ultimately included in the family Peronosporaceae after ribosomal analysis [ 1 , 2 ]. Advances in molecular analysis have enabled the elucidation of these issues and the description of new genera such as Phytopythium [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. Currently, a total of 365 species and subspecies have been described ( , accessed on 2 May 2022) in the genus Phytophthora , and this number continues to increase [ 5 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”
