Proteus spp. are members of the Enterobacteriaceae family and are Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria known to mainly cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) in humans. However, even though scarce evidence exists suggesting their potential to cause infective endocarditis (IE), a study summarizing the existing evidence is lacking. The purpose of this study was to systemically review all published cases of IE by Proteus species in the literature. A systematic review of PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library (through 5 th May 2020) for studies providing epidemiological, clinical and microbiological data as well as data on treatment and outcomes of IE by Proteus species was performed. A total of 16 studies, containing data of 16 patients, were included. A prosthetic valve was present in 25%, while the most common causative pathogen was P. mirabilis. Aortic valve was the most common infected site in 33.3%, followed by mitral valve in 26.7%. Diagnosis was set with transesophageal echocardiography in 37.5%, and transthoracic echocardiography in 25%, while the diagnosis was set at autopsy in 25%. Fever and sepsis were present in 100% and 84.6%, respectively. Aminoglycosides and cephalosporins were the most common antimicrobials used for treatment. Clinical cure was noted in 62.5%, while overall mortality was 43.8%. This systematic review describes IE by Proteus species in detail and provides information on epidemiology, clinical presentation, treatment and outcomes.

The microbial diversity and communities in the excrement of healthy and patients suffered from cancer were identified by 16SrDNA sequencing performed on the Illumina Hi Seq sequencing platform. The microbial difference was also analyzed. The sequencing results showed high quality of the data, and the microbial communities were more various in the excrement of cancer patients. And the abundance of Firmicutes phylum was significantly reduced in cancer group. The phylum of Fermicutes, Bacteroidetes in cancer group are significantly down-regulated and up-regulated compared with normal group. The species of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Bateroides vulgatus and Fusicatenibacter saccharivorans are significantly lower in cancer group than that in normal group (P< 0.05). The species of Prevetella copri, M. uniformis, and Escherichia coli are significantly higher in the cancer group than that in normal group. The comparative results indicated that beneficial bacterium significantly decreased in colorectal cancer (CRC) group, and harmful bacterium significantly increased in the colon cancer group, meanwhile the acidity, sugar increased whereas the oxygen content decreased to facilitate the growth of harmful bacterium. The results would provide microbial approaches for the treatment of colon cancer by the intake of beneficial microbial communities.

Infective Endocarditis (IE) is associated with significant mortality. Interestingly, IE in patients with liver transplantation has not been adequately described. The aim of this review was to systematically review all published cases of IE in liver transplant recipients and describe their epidemiology, microbiology, clinical characteristics, treatment and outcomes. A systematic review of PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library (through 2nd January 2021) for studies providing epidemiological, clinical, microbiological, treatment data and outcomes of IE in liver transplant recipients was conducted. A total of 39 studies, containing data for 62 patients, were included in the analysis. The most common causative pathogens were gram-positive microorganisms in 69.4%, fungi in 25.8%, and gram-negative microorganisms in 9.7% of cases, while in 9.3% IE was culture-negative. The aortic valve was the most commonly infected valve followed by mitral, tricuspid and the pulmonary valve. Aminoglycosides, vancomycin and aminopenicillins were the most commonly used antimicrobials, and surgical management was performed in half of the cases. Clinical cure was noted in 57.4%, while overall mortality was 43.5%. To conclude, this systematic review thoroughly describes IE in liver transplant recipients and provides information on epidemiology, clinical presentation, treatment and outcomes.
