RImplementation of a Polyhedral Approximation to a 3D Set of Points Using theα-Shape

Abstract: This work presents the implementation in R of the α-shape of a finite set of points in the three-dimensional space R 3. This geometric structure generalizes the convex hull and allows to recover the shape of non-convex and even non-connected sets in 3D, given a random sample of points taken into it. Besides the computation of the α-shape, the R package alphashape3d provides users with tools to facilitate the three-dimensional graphical visualization of the estimated set as well as the computation of important … Show more

“…The R programming language (Development Core Team, 2011) is perhaps the premier environment for statistical data analysis, is well supported by the integrated development environment RStudio and is a strong choice for data visualisation (Wickham, 2016). It already hosts a wealth of packages for general morphometric and graph theoretic analysis (Csardi and Nepusz, 2006;Duong, 2007;Lafarge et al, 2014;Schlager, 2017). An R package is a bundle of functions, documentation, data, tests and example code (Wickham, 2015).…”

“…The most suitable α index would be the one that encloses the smallest volume whilst maintaining a solid surface free from voids. To calculate the α-shape of the branches of each section, thus to compute the volume enclosed, a 3D algorithm available in the alphashape3d package from R [27] based on the original work of [24] was used. The resulting point clouds representing the vine shoots were strictly woody structures, since at that maturity stage, there were no leaves due to the winter season.…”

“…The ATLS point clouds were transformed into convex hull structures approximating the shape and volume of the scanned trees using the "ashape3d" function in the alphashape3d R package [18]. The convex hull is fitted with Delauney Triangulation (drawing triangles between points so that there is no overlap between triangles).…”

“…A potential novel method could use terrestrial lidar (TLS) because three-dimensional lidar point clouds, based on the laser return-time/distance relationship, can be generated for any size tree. The point clouds can be transformed into a convex hull with a polyhedral surface approximating the shape of the tree, from which volumes can be calculated [17][18][19]. Intercepted snow volume can be estimated by subtracting snow-free tree volume from snow-on tree volume.…”
