S100A6 Is Increased in a Stepwise Manner during Pancreatic Carcinogenesis: Clinical Value of Expression Analysis in 98 Pancreatic Juice Samples

Abstract: There are few reports describing the diagnostic significance of S100A6 expression in clinical samples obtained from patients with pancreatic disease. In the present study, we measured S100A6 expression in pancreatic tissues and juice to evaluate its involvement in pancreatic carcinogenesis. We did quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR to measure mRNA expression in microdissected cells and pancreatic juice samples. Microdissected invasive ductal carcinoma and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (… Show more

“…The S100A6 protein may be relevant to pancreatic cancer prognosis (30). Ohuchida et al (75,76) analyzed the secretion of S100A6 protein expression in normal pancreatic tissue, PanIN and IDC of the pancreas, and found that the level of S100A6 expression in pancreatic cancer was significantly higher than that in noncancerous tissue. S100A6 protein expression in cancerous pancreatic juice was significantly higher than that in normal pancreatic juice (35).…”

“…Its high expression levels often precede a poor prognosis. However, there is no evidence to date to support a correlation between S100A6 and the occurrence, differentiation and metastasis of pancreatic cancer (75,76,77). S100P.…”

“…Several studies have identified overexpression of S100A6 in pancreatic cancer Logsdon et al, 2003;Shekouh et al, 2003), in PanIN lesions (Vimalachandran et al, 2005) and in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (Ohuchida et al, 2007b). Moreover, high level expression has been linked to poor outcome (Vimalachandran et al, 2005).…”

“…S100A6 is most abundant in epithelial cells and fibroblasts but is also found, in smaller amounts, in other cell-types such as neurons, glial cells, smooth muscle cells, cardiac myocytes, platelets and lymphocytes [215,216](reviewed in [217]). S100A6 has been found elevated in a large number of cancer types which include colorectal cancer, pancreatic, hepato-cellular carcinoma, melanoma, lung cancer and gastric cancer [165,[218][219][220][221][222][223][224](reviewed in [217]). In melanoma tumor samples, a positive correlation was found between the levels of S100A6 transcripts and the severity of the disease [165].…”
