Staphylococcus spp. isolated from wild birds apprehended in the local illegal trade in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and relevance in public health

Abstract: The isolation of Staphylococcus species that are not commonly isolated from wild bird faeces, the relatively high proportion of strains showing degrees of resistance to β-lactamics, lincosamides and tetracycline, and also the presence of mecA and blaZ genes that has been associated with multidrug phenotype reveal its public health relevance and zoonotic potential. Consequently, this represents an important route to transmission of this pathogen and its antimicrobial resistance mechanisms throughout national an… Show more

“…In this regard, S. haemolyticus has been linked to septicemia, human endocarditis, and urinary tract infection (Kloos and Bannerman, 1994). Similar to results in the present study, but at a lower level, S. chromogenes, S. haemolyticus, and S. simulans were isolated from cloacal swabs of wild birds in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Matias et al, 2018).…”

“…Although scarce, studies on the presence of ARGs in penguins have associated ARGs occurrence with anthropization in remote locations(20,46).The mecA gene was detected in 14% (2/14) of kelp gulls, but not in penguins. This gene was reported in other wild bird groups in Brazil [passerines(47)] and Europe [corvids…”

“…This isolate had a multidrug-resistant profile and carried the mph C, msr (A/B) and tet O genes. S. haemolyticus has been isolated from wild birds in Brazil [ 77 ] and in wild pheasant meat in the Slovak Republic [ 78 ]. One isolate of S. saprophyticus also harbored the mec A gene but was susceptible to all antibiotics tested.…”
