Secondary Traumatic Stress, Mental State, and Work Ability in Nurses—Results of a Psychological Risk Assessment at a University Hospital

Psychological risk assessment is a legal obligation for companies and part of occupational safety and employment protection in Germany. However, data from psychological risk assessments in nursing staff are scarce, although this population is at increased risk for secondary traumatic stress by patient experienced trauma. Therefore, our study aimed at examining the frequency of reported secondary trauma events, secondary traumatic stress, and its possible consequences for psychological well-being and work ability in nurses. N = 320 nurses (n = 280 female) were assessed at a University Hospital in Germany as part of the psychological risk assessment. Secondary traumatic events, secondary traumatic stress, and symptoms of depression and anxiety were measured using self-report questionnaires (PHQ-2, GAD-2), and work ability was assessed using a modified version of the questionnaire for workplace analysis (KFZA). Of 320 nurses, 292 (91.2%) experienced secondary trauma, and 74 nurses (25.3%) reported secondary traumatic symptoms. Nurses with secondary traumatic symptoms reported higher depression (p < 0.001) and anxiety scores (p < 0.001) compared to nurses without secondary trauma experience, and to nurses with secondary trauma experience but without secondary traumatic stress (both p < 0.001). Further, nurses with secondary traumatic stress reported significantly reduced work ability, social support and control over work, and increased emotional strain and labor time. Nurses with secondary traumatic stress may be at increased risk of developing major depression and anxiety disorders, and particularly need support in overcoming secondary traumatic experiences. Psychological risk assessment is a useful tool to identify groups at risk, and pave the way to implement strategies to improve mental well-being and prevent work ability in high risk groups.

Objective: This study explores the correlation between life satisfaction and ADHD symptoms. It also discusses whether resilience mediates the correlation between ADHD symptoms and life satisfaction. Method: We surveyed 297 dental students. A total of 291 completed a self-report scale consisting of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, Wender Utah Rating Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale, and Conner–Davidson Resilience Scale. The study used hierarchical linear regression analysis, resampling, and asymptotic strategies for data processing. Results: The ADHD screening results of the self-report scale were positive for 6.87% of the students. This positive rate differed among participants of diverse ages and varying paternal education levels. ADHD symptoms were negatively correlated with life satisfaction and resilience. Life satisfaction was observably positively associated with resilience. Resilience serves as a mediating role between life satisfaction and the two symptoms of ADHD. Conclusion: Resilience intervention programs can enhance the life satisfaction of dental students, especially those with positive ADHD symptoms screening.

Gangguan mental terjadi akibat interaksi kompleks antara faktor sosial, psikologis dan biologis. Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir gangguan mental menjadi salah satu permasalahan kesehatan yang signifikan di dunia, termasuk Indonesia. Seseorang dengan gangguan mental yang tidak segera ditangani dapat berujung pada tindakan bunuh diri. Untuk mencegahnya, gangguan mental harus segera diatasi dengan pemberian farmakoterapi seperti antidepresan, psikoterapi, atau kombinasi keduanya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pola penggunaan obat antidepresan terhadap pasien rawat inap dan rawat jalan dengan gangguan mental di RS TNI AL Dr. Mintohardjo Jakarta periode 2020. Metode penelitian adalah deskriptif dengan pendekatan potong lintang. Sampel penelitian ini menggunakan data rekam medik dari 96 subjek rawat inap dan rawat jalan dengan gangguan mental yang mendapatkan terapi obat antidepresan. Dari hasil penelitian terdapat 7 pasien rawat inap dan 89 pasien rawat jalan yang menggunakan antidepresan. Seluruh pasien rawat inap (100%) mendapatkan terapi antidepresan sesuai indikasi, dua subjek (28.5%) mendapatkan obat antidepresan tidak sesuai dosis dan frekuensinya. Untuk pasien rawat jalan 98.8% pemberian obat sesuai indikasi, dan 11,2% tidak sesuai dosis dan frekuensinya. Golongan obat antidepresan terbanyak yang diberikan pada pasien rawat jalan maupun rawat inap adalah Sertralin (42.8% pasien rawat inap dan 70.7% pasien rawat jalan).
