Wetlands scatter as microclimates in mountain areas of Iran. In this investigation, the chromosome number of species and populations from Azerbaijan provinces were studied. After seed germination and root fixation, meristem cells were stained and photographs were taken for cells in the metaphase stage by light microscope. Data were analyzed by Micromeasure and excel softwares. As many as 28 populations of 24 species were studied. The chromosome numbers of two species (viz. Ranunculus kotschyi) were reported for the first time. 11 populations in 9 species were reported for the first time from Iranian populations (viz. Alisma plantago-aquatica, Prunella vulgaris, Scrophularia umbrosa). The range of haploid chromosome numbers is between n=6 and n=21. Ideograms were depicted for each species.

Iris sect. Psammiris comprises rhizomatous perennials distributed in the north temperate zone of Eurasia. The systematics of the section are currently based on morphology, and the phylogenetic relationships within it still remain unclear. In the framework of Iris systematics, we conducted molecular and morphological analyses of the currently recognized I. sect. Psammiris species to elucidate the taxonomic composition and relationships within the section. The phylogenetic reconstructions based on sequence variation of four noncoding chloroplast DNA regions support the monophyly of I. sect. Psammiris, which includes I. tigridia, while I. potaninii var. ionantha belongs to I. sect. Pseudoregelia. The proposed novel classification of I. sect. Psammiris recognizes three series: an autonymic series with I. humilis, I. bloudowii, and I. vorobievii and two unispecific series (I. ser. Potaninia with I. potaninii and I. ser. Tigridiae with I. tigridia). In addition, the taxonomic statuses of I. arenaria, I. ivanovae, I. kamelinii, I. mandshurica, I. pineticola, I. psammocola, and I. schmakovii are clarified herein. We provide a revised taxonomic treatment for I. sect. Psammiris, including notes on the types; updated information on species synonymy, distributions, habitats, and chromosome numbers; and a new identification key to the species. Three lectotypes are designated here.

The study of morphology, meiotic behavior, chromosome number and pollen morphology of different populations of Onobrychis shahpurensis Rech. f. (O. sect. Onobrychis) was undertaken to evaluate and determine the variation and circumscription of this species in Iran. All populations were found to be diploid with 2n=2x=14, consistent with the previously proposed base number x=7 for the species. Almost all the populations displayed regular bivalent pairing and chromosome segregation at meiosis. However, some meiotic abnormalities were observed including various degrees of sticky chromosomes with laggards and bridges in anaphase to telophase, fragmented chromosomes in metaphase I, asynchronous nucleus in metaphase II and cytomixis. In addition, Onobrychis neychalanensis Ranjbar, Hadadi & Karamian, a new diploid species (2n=2x=14), belonging to the same section and morhologically similar to O. shahpurensis, but restricted to the northern Khalil‐Kuh mountain, northwest Iran, is described and illustrated.
