Abstract:The author describes the game of ice hockey and the use of data analysis and mathematical modeling to answer questions of interest to ice hockey fans, coaches, and managers. Most of the discussion is in the context of the National Hockey League (NHL), the primary professional ice hockey league. Particular attention has been paid to two questions: when to pull the goalie, and how to estimate the probability that a particular NHL team will qualify for the playoffs.
