Ichthyoplankton studies as referential for the management and monitoring of fishery resources in the Brazilian Amazon basin

Abstract: Studies on ichthyoplankton ecology become essential when one realizes the importance and influence of this component in dynamics, conservation, and maintenance of fishery resources. However, ecological information about this subject is still scarce and has not been properly valued and used by environmental managers and decision-makers. In this study, we present the state of the art of research on ichthyoplankton in the Amazon region. The number of studies has been increasing over time but they are scarce and r… Show more

“…However, work on describing the early stages of the fish life cycle has grown in this region (Machado‐Allison et al., 2020; Nakatani et al., 2001; Orsi et al., 2016; Ponton & Mérigoux, 2001). In Brazil, studies of this nature they can be considered incipient, as they encompass approximately 4% of valid species, and are often incomplete and/or do not include details of the different stages of development (Orsi et al., 2016; Reynalte‐Tataje et al., 2020; Zacardi, Santos, et al., 2020).…”

“…Accordingly, conservation of fish eggs and larvae is fundamental for the maintenance of fishery resources. In a paper focused on the Brazilian Amazon, Zacardi et al (2020) review the current knowledge on the ecology of early life stages of Amazon fish, discussing how increasing knowledge of ichthyoplankton ecology can support management strategies aimed at mitigating disturbances across the basin.…”

“…However, many studies of this nature address only larval and juvenile development. Precisely because most studies are carried out with specimens collected in natural environments, whose identification of eggs at species or even genus level becomes an arduous and often impossible task without the use of genetics, due to the intense interspecific similarity between freshwater fish eggs, especially migratory (Reynalte‐Tataje et al, 2020; Zacardi et al, 2020).…”

“…The absence of studies of this nature is associated with the lack of literature that helps the correct identification of fish eggs and larvae in the natural environment (Reynalte‐Tataje et al, 2020). It is emphasized that although the Amazon region has the greatest fish biodiversity in the world, there are still few studies that address the description of the early ontogeny of fish species (Zacardi et al, 2020). However, knowledge of larval phases is pivotal to assist in the management and conservation of tropical fishery stocks (Cajado et al, 2021; Oliveira et al, 2021; Silva et al, 2021).…”
