iCoRe: The GDELT Interface for the Advancement of Communication Research

Abstract: This article introduces the interface for communication research (iCoRe) to access, explore, and analyze the Global Database of Events, Language and Tone (GDELT; Leetaru & Schrodt, 2013). GDELT provides a vast, open source, and continuously updated repository of online news and event metadata collected from tens of thousands of news outlets around the world. Despite GDELT’s promise for advancing communication science, its massive scale and complex data structures have hindered efforts of communication … Show more

“…We utilized the Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone (GDELT; to acquire Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) of articles from our chosen sources with at least 500 words (for an accessible introduction to GDELT, see Hopp, Schaffer, Fisher, and Weber (2019). Various computationally derived metadata measures were also acquired, including the topics discussed in the article.…”

“…GDELT's Global Knowledge Graph (GKG) connects the people, organizations, locations, themes, numbers, images and emotions into one holistic network across the planet. Each GKG record is a pairing of a set of names, events, counts, actors, locations, themes, and tones (GDELT, 2019, Hopp, et al, 2019.…”

“…The study introduced the GDELT database as a fruitful data source to be tapped for strategic communication research (for a newly introduced tool facilitating its use, see Hopp et al, 2019). It provides real-time data on media and online coverage worldwide.…”

“…For the study of social movements, GDELT data can be used to map protests, for instance, the Women's March, and organizations' reactions to such events, either in terms of crisis communication or regarding corporate political advocacy. With the development of more accessible tools for (strategic) communication researchers (Hopp et al, 2019), even more application areas will become apparent that do not require programming or database handling skills. Furthermore, the global focus of the database allows including the under researched area of the Global South to get a bigger picture of strategic communication's impact across the world.…”
